What was life like before training:

I wasn’t in control of my weight. I was unhappy in how overweight I was and how it made me look. Not being able to fit into nice outfits or feel specifically good. I would avoid the camera! My energy levels were quite low and although I would go on and love walking when I did it was never a regular occurrence. I remember my friends climbing up Hartshead Pike and I was literally miles behind, unable to do it! I didn’t go to the gym at all. My diet was comfort foods and whatever gave me an easy life or so I thought!

Why did you start?

Turning 40 was a huge milestone and wake up call. Was I just going to grow old not feeling confident and energetic? I wanted to go on a journey and create life changing experiences. My BMI was classed as obese and if we did want IVF with my age I didn’t stand a chance and knowing I had the tools to change that part was everything

What is life like now?

I’m more aware. I don’t particularly drink alcohol as I want to get up in the mornings and go exploring! I don’t restrict myself I just have a nice healthy balance in both my eating and exercise habits. My knees are stronger, I can lift heavier that helps me day to day, I don’t have physio on my back anymore as it seems to recover better now. I’ve taken up new exercises such as gym, yoga, hikes, Pilates and can fit in 3-4 sessions a week now without me even realising!!

What advice would you give someone hesitant to start?

It’s not what you think. It’s far more than someone showing you exercises. It gets you into a routine and grows your confidence in a different way. It gives you the spotlight to focus on your wellbeing as a whole and it’s not a race. Every journey is very different. It definitely gives you the skills to go into a gym and use equipment safely and correctly. You can focus in on any specific joint pains you might have and it makes you have habits and a lifestyle that keeps the weight off.

Why did you start?

After (another) health issue, I decided to take some positive steps, so started by joining the gym. Then realised I didn't know what the hell I was doing so decided to find a PT! Georgina looked like the right fit for me as her message was rooted in lifestyle and functionality rather than image.

What is life like now?

Things have definitely improved! I have been working with Georgina for about 18 months now and it's so important for me to have her holding me accountable! I've managed to maintain her program consistently, the longest I've stuck with anything that isn't work related and have seen a steady increase in my strength, mobility and fitness but without ever feeling like my body has been completely destroyed!! Better nutrition has followed quite naturally as I'm more aware of what my body needs to feel fuelled. My stress levels are definitely more in control and it's been great to have something 'other' to focus on that requires some discipline. I can't always be bothered to train but I always feel much better afterwards!

What advice would you give someone hesitant to start?

It's well worth it! Think of it as an investment into your long-term health. I've found having something solid to follow is far more effective than just going to the gym and hoping for the best! Great for making sure you're using the equipment/your body correctly.
